Can sunflowers be an example to us when we are struggling?

Updated: Jan 30, 2018

Flowers are a wonderful and beautiful gift from God, especially sunflowers. Growing up, I have always loved to look at them and have always dreamed of going to sunflower fields. What joy would that be! Seeing all the beautiful yellow petals are bound to make you happy. Last summer, my father and I planted our own sunflowers. We both watered them, and it was soothing to slowly watch them blossom. Although my dad had to plant some seeds twice, it taught me that patience was really worth it!

The sunlight is good for many things. A tan that is desperately needed, plants, and it even makes your bones stronger! Now, for me, I absolutely love summer- although the heat does tend to make me miss the rain. But it's because the sun makes me happy. Seeing the shining rays through the window is like opening presents on Christmas day for me.I can even walk outside barefoot! Grass between your toes is a joy that I will never take for granted.

An interesting fact about sunflowers is that they grow toward the sunlight, and we can use that as an example in our own lives. But sadly, facing towards the sunlight is sometimes a difficult thing to do in life. Whether it is to give a smile when your heart is breaking, or whether it is being someone to lean on when you too are going through something. I have found myself struggling to look at the positive things in life, and that can weigh me down. Sometimes I fail to recognize the beautiful miracles and blessings that have made their way into my life. While we said goodbye to 2017, I promised myself that I would try and look at things with a more positive outlook. Now, even if it is the end of January, I still am struggling with that concept.

It is so easy to get in the habit of looking at things with a negative mask. When something happens that we don't necessarily plan, some tend to throw their hands up and say that they are done (this is something that I tend to do). My father always told me that I could do hard things, and I am glad he taught me that lesson. Because I CAN do hard things. I will admit, there are times that I feel I cannot push through and I feel helpless. When I was in High School, I was going through some really tough emotional challenges. Some days I would go home and not want to go back to school. My grandpa Luster and late grandmother visited one Saturday, and my grandpa said something that I will truly never forget.. God does not give you what you can't handle. That honestly struck me to the core. He was right. Our Father in heaven knows us, and knows the struggles we can move through. Even though it may be difficult, the things we go through will build character and be for our good. Don't get me wrong, that isn't easy. When my grandmother died, I did not know why this could build my character- I still don't! But I do know that it taught me to love deeper, and be grateful for the time I have with my family. My grandfather and I have a relationship that I cherish, and he has helped me when I needed it.

Sunflower stalks are a bit tough to break. In the winds of life, we too must have 'tough stalks'. Yes there will be times in life that feel like a hurricane, but we need to move on. And on the very bottom line, sunflowers give off beauty. Let's show our beautiful smiles and make others happy.

Sunflowers can be compared to everything. Hope, love, life, happiness.

Here, let me show you.

Imagine each petal Gracefully touching your lips, traveling all over your Face, stopping at your twinkling blue eyes. Love.

The Yellow of the petals is the sweltering sun, Beating down. Warming your insides and tanning your skin. The seeds being Laughter, Tickling the insides of your mouth. Happiness.

The long green stems growing too mountainous Heights, spilling over running children and smiling adults. Life.

The scent filling your vivacious lungs, Propelling you forward, Content with this. Hope.
